Western Railway's Medical Department has proactively initiated every possible effort to offer best medical services & timely life-saving procedures to its patients. This dedication of work to humanity increased manifold during the challenging times of COVID -19 pandemic. The medical Department of Western Railway rose to the occasion and worked day & night for the treatment & well-being of the affected patients. Western Railway had been in the forefront in adopting state-of-the-art technologies, latest medical procedures of treatment & creating a robust infrastructure for the treatment of COVID patients in the shortest possible time. In recognition of this, the Ministry of Railways has conferred the prestigious Comprehensive Health Care Shield for the year 2020 to Western Railway. This achievement has been earned due to the able leadership, valuable guidance & motivation of Shri Alok Kansal - General Manager of Western Railway. Shri Kansal stated that it is a matter of great pride for Western Railway and congratulated Principal Chief Medical Director of Western Railway & his entire team for this commendable performance.

According to a press release issued by Shri Sumit Thakur - Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic last year, Western Railway's Zonal Hospital, Jagjivan Ram Hospital at Mumbai, was turned into a full-fledged COVID hospital and had become a combat zone. Jagjivan Ram Hospital earned the distinction of being the first Railway Hospital over Indian Railways to be dedicated as COVID Hospital. Thereafter, Divisional Hospitals at Vadodara and Ratlam also extended their services for COVID patients. Presently, 150 beds at JRH & 63 beds at Vadodara hospital have been designated for COVID patients. More than 6300 COVID patients have been treated in Railway Hospitals of Western Railway.

Shri Thakur stated that during the year 2020 – 21, around 3400 COVID positive patients were admitted & treated at Jagjivan Ram Hospital. In November 2020, the non - COVID services were resumed with full-fledged OPD services in the newly renovated OPD wing of Jagjivan Ram Hospital. All the operation theatres including GEOT, CVTS, General O.T have also resumed in a full-fledged manner since December 2020. An o­nline app for OPD appointments has been developed & implemented to streamline the number of patients inorder to avoid overcrowding at hospital premises. Around 49,000 OPD patients have been treated and 681 major surgeries & 615 minor surgeries done. At present, Jagjivan Ram Hospital is operating 150 beds for COVID positive patients, 30 beds for transit/suspect patients and 180 beds for non - COVID patients.

Giving further details, Shri Thakur stated that Jagjivan Ram Hospital is a 361 bedded multi-speciality hospital. A state-of-the-art RT-PCR Lab has been started with NABL accreditation in January 2021, where in-house RT-PCR tests are being done. This is the first Molecular RT-PCR laboratory which has Bio Safety Level-3 (BSL-3) facility over Indian Railways. Rapid Antigen tests are also done to detect positive patients immediately. The ICUs and OTs have been equipped with negative pressure to deal with COVID patients. Central Oxygen supply has been made available in General wards alongwith installation of an additional 1,000 litre Liquid Oxygen Tank. Latest modalities of treatment including Plasma therapy had been made available for the treatment of COVID patients. Recently, MCGM recognized & designated JRH as a COVID Vaccination Centre which commenced from 8th March, 2021 and till now 1752 COVID vaccinations have been administered.

Meticulously planned steps taken by the Medical Department during the corona pandemic, with humane approach, helping attitude and tactfulness has helped Western Railway to put up a strong fight against the pandemic. Western Railway is proud of its dedicated team of doctors as well as paramedical staff and salutes their determination, grit and hardwork in the service of humanity.
