WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY OBSERVED o­n WESTERN RAILWAY


A WEBINAR ORGANISED o­n THE THEME OF 'ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION’

World Environment Day isobserved o­n 5th of June every year to raise global awareness with a view to initiate positive environmental actions to protect nature. This year World Environment Day was observed over Western Railway with the theme 'Ecosystem Restoration’ at Headquarters & across all six divisions. To mark this occasion, Shri Alok Kansal – General Manager of Western Railway planted a sapling in the lawns of Headquarter building by followingCOVID – 19 safety protocols.

 

According to a press release issued by Shri Sumit Thakur – Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, in view of the prevailing COVID-19 situation, the World Environment Day was observed digitally through webinar which was presided by General Manager Shri Kansal and was attended by senior officers & representatives of recognized trade unions & associations. Addressing the webinar, Shri Alok Kansal stressed upon the need to take all possible steps in the day to day working of Railways to conserve environment & find ways to protect our Ecosystem. Taking forward this commitment, Shri Kansal launched the ‘Mission Zero Leakage’, a novel initiative to conserve water & to plug the wastage of water. He appealed to judiciously use water. Shri Kansal stressed upon the need to save Mother Earth by restoration of ecosystem & conservation of environment. He inaugurated several environment-friendly initiatives such as Automatic Coach Washing Plant, Solid Waste Management System for Zero Waste Management, Sewage Treatment Plant & Integrated Solar Lights with Motion Sensors at various locations and dedicated the GOLD Green Building Standard Certificate to DRM Office, Ahmedabad conferred by IGBC. An e-booklet titled Certifications of Work Areas to Boost Performance was also released by him. Shri Subhajit Mukherjee, a well-known environmental enthusiast & Founder of Mission Green Mumbai addressed the webinar o­n Ecosystem Restoration/Rainwater Conservation. He presented his views o­n Water conservation & propounded the idea of Catch the Rain to restore the depleting groundwater levels by constructing underground pits & ducts along railway tracks, etc.
