Shri G V L Satya Kumar - Divisional Railway Manager of W. Rly’s Mumbai Division inaugurated three Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines on the august occasion of Independence Day of our nation. This is in accordance to the Railway Board directives to reduce, recycle and dispose plastic waste generated in stations in an eco-friendly manner and W. Rly has already installed 17 Bottle Crushing Machines under CSR at various stations of Mumbai Division.

According to a press release issued by Shri Sumit Thakur - Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, various green initiatives have been undertaken by WR under the dynamic leadership of General Manager Shri Alok Kansal, propagating the mantra of Reduse, Recycle and Dispose the plastic waste in an eco-friendly environment over W. Rly. Accordingly, Mumbai Division of W. Rly has awarded the tender for 25 Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines on Non Fare Revenue (NFR) module.Three of these machines have already been installed at Mumbai central station while the others will be soon installed at Churchgate (04), Lower Parel (01), Prabhadevi (01), Dadar (02), Matunga Road (01), Mahim (01), Bandra (01), Bandra Terminus (02), Andheri (02), Malad (01), Kandivali (01), Borivali (02), Vasai Road (01), Nallasopara (01) & Virar (01) stations.

Shri Thakur stated that if these Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines are procured though expenditure module, the same will cost around Rs. 3,50,000/- per machine including cost of machine as well as other incidental expenses. Instead of procurement of Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines on expenditure module, Mumbai Division decided to acquire these machines on earning module with a dual objective of to curb expenditure and to earn Non Fare Revenue, wherein Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines provider will get opportunity to earn through display of advertisements on Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines as well as sale of plastic flakes collected in the machine. With continuous and enthusiastic efforts of Non Fare Revenue (NFR) team under the aegis of Smt. Jagriti Singla - Senior Divisional Commercial Manager, Mumbai Central, W. Rly’s Mumbai Division has braved every odds in this challenging scenario of COVID – 19 pandemic and has been successful in tapping an offer of Rs.15,000/- per annum with 5 year earning potential of Rs.82,985/- wherein the contractor will provide as well as maintain 25 Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines approx costing Rs. 3,50,000/- each for 5 years at 16 stations. With this commendable effort, Western Railway has not only garnered an additional revenue to the tune of Rs. 82,985/- (5 years earning potential) in the form of license fees, but has also saved the cost of procurement of these machines which will run into anywhere around Rs. 87,50,000/-. In the same direction, yet another tender of 33 Plastic Bottle Crushing Machines at 23 stations is in the last stages of finalization, having a revenue potential of Rs.5,28,000/- per annum (Rs.29,20,967/- for 5 year) with a saving of Rs. 1,15,50,000/-. Shri Thakur further mentioned that W. Rly fully supports the ban on single use plastic items and hence it has banned the use of plastic cups, glasses, plates etc.WR also runs ‘No Plastic’ awarenesscampaigns from time-to-time to spread awareness about the ill effects of plastic on the environment. W. Rly urges its esteemed passengers to join hands with us in this noble cause in order to conserve our Mother Nature for the better future of our coming generations.
