Western Railway has successfully undertaken various infrastructural upgrading and augmentation works. In the recent past, Western Railway has finished several construction works of Foot Over Bridges (FOBs) and Skywalks and have undertaken repair work of Road Over Bridges (ROBs) and FOBs, by optimum utilization of traffic blocks. Continuing in this series, the South FOB at Mahim station was dismantled during the traffic & power blocks taken from 10th to 13th April, 2021.

According to a press release issued by Shri Sumit Thakur – Chief Public Relations Officer of Western Railway, in lieu of the old FOB dismantled at Mahim, a new 6 metre wide FOB has already been opened for the use of commuters in May 2020. The width of the new FOB is more than that of the old FOB, which caters more commuters and also help in avoiding the crowd during the peak hours. The old MCGM FOB at Mahim was 4m wide and 62m long and involved removal of approx. 35 MT structural steel (including 6 girders & 4 columns) was successfully delaunched during the night block. It is worthwhile to mention that all other preparatory works involving removal of flooring, deck slab, cross girders, railing etc. were also completed during the traffic & power blocks before the delaunching of girders &columns. The dismantling of the old FOB has also resulted in the improvement in OHE profile by improvement in height, encumbrance of contact and catenary wire.

Shri Thakur further informed that even in such challenging times, Western Railway has ensured that its infrastructure developmental works are not hindered and that the works are completed well within the target using crisis as opportunity. During 2020-21, 14 new Foot Over Bridges & two new Skywalks have been commissioned on Mumbai Suburban section. Works of other FOBs, ROB repairs & installation of new escalators over different locations are also under progress. Western Railway always gives top priority when it comes to safety of the passengers.
