Ahmedabad Railway Division
Ahmedabad Railway Division is an important part of the Western Railway zone of Indian Railways. It was formed on 1 April 2003, when some areas of Vadodara and Rajkot divisions were reorganized as Ahmedabad Division to increase the efficiency of railway management and streamline regional operations. The headquarters of Ahmedabad Division is located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, and the division manages various major routes and stations of the area. Currently around 142 stations are being operated under Ahmedabad Division.
Before the division was formed, railway services in Ahmedabad and its surrounding areas were running for a long time. Ahmedabad Junction railway station was established in the 19th century itself (around 20 January 1863). In this development, keeping in view the economic, social and industrial needs, the railway network expanded, providing better connectivity to various parts of Gujarat.
Ahmedabad division has been formed by combining various sections of Ajmer, Rajkot and Vadodara divisions. This new division has a section of 316 km from Vadodara division, 610 km from Rajkot division and 484 km from Ajmer division. Ahmedabad division extends up to Nalia in the west, Khedbrahma in the east, Palanpur in the north and Gairatpur in the south.
After its formation, Ahmedabad Railway Division has played a vital role in modernizing the services in its zone and meeting the growing demand for passenger and freight transport. The division has set new records in the field of freight transportation. Under the Amrit Bharat Station Project, renovation work is going on at many stations of the division. Ahmedabad Railway Division is continuously moving towards progress by efficiently coordinating with Dedicated Freight Corridor, Railway Recruitment Board, Rail Vikas Nigam Limited, Gatishakti Project Office etc.
